Emerald City Trapeze Arts started in 2009 as Gary Kirkland’s dream to bring the thrill of trapeze and other aerial performance arts to the land of rain and evergreens. Located in Sodo’s historic Canal Boiler Building at Lander and 6th, Emerald City offers weekly classes in flying trapeze and aerial arts, including silks, rope, hoop and various forms of conditioning. The experienced instructors have experience with Cirque de Soleil, Club Med, Ringling Brothers and performance stages around the world. Come to SANCA, a non-profit that provides kids of all economic backgrounds the fun of learning tumbling, juggling, aerial arts and more! The adult aerial classes teach you the basics of body positions and control on trapeze and rope. The class focuses on conditioning exercises and stretches to help students develop the skill, strength, flexibility and body awareness necessary to successfully pursue aerial acrobatics. The skills taught include rope climbing, basic straddle-up techniques, inversion techniques, ball, faux flag, baby hiplock and catcher’s hang on ropes. And on the trapeze, you’ll learn trapeze beats, basket hang, knee hang, knee beats and sitting gracefully and balancing on the trapeze bar. Classes meet once a week for a twelve-week session. Knotty Yoga is centered around each student having their own aerial fabric on which to perform yoga, acrobatics conditioning, and strength training moves. The floor of the studio is an inch thick of foam acrobatics flooring. Yoga mats are not needed. There are also several circus ropes and trapezes. Exercises are done low to the ground. A fear of heights is not an issue. No upper body strength is needed and classes are offered at different levels which are accessible to beginners while allowing elite athletes to have their limits probed. Basic aerial classes are offered at Knotty Yoga in rope, trapeze, and fabric.
